One of the places not to be missed in Spain is the Montserrat Funicular. This great attraction is located in Montserrat National Park. You can get the train from Plaça Espanya in Barcelona and head towards Manresa, you would need to get off at Monistrol Montserrat.
The Montserrat Funicular will take you various places all over the National Park. And when I say all over, I mean all over! It is a magical aerial ride overlooking the whole park and its top attractions. There is actually two funiculars and a cable car to enjoy!
The top attractions really are high up at the top, so you can get there only by funicular. One of them is the famous Santa Maria de Montserrat monastery, commonly referred to as Santuario de Montserrat “Monasterio Santa María de Montserrat” a beautiful place to visit regardless of your religion.
From that point on, the route goes two different ways, either leading you to the Sant Jeroni Mountain (where you can hike) or to the Santa Cova cave. The last one has an aura of mysticism around it, legend speaks of Virgin Mary’s appearance inside the cove 800 years ago. If you’re not a hiker or a cave explorer, you can simply enjoy Aula de la Natur, a small centre telling you all about the park’s nature. If you do feel like seeing what the centre advertises, you can easily hike the park and go as far as you want; the landscapes certainly won’t disappoint you.
It is definitely worth the day trip you can make from Barcelona. And seeing the summit is an experience not to be missed! Perhaps the highlight of the whole park is the Stairway to Heaven Sculpture which affords you some staggering views from its platform.
